Heart X Girth Measurement

A very easy way to calculate the approximate weight of your horse.

The girth is measured in inches using a tape around the horse's barrel immediately behind the elbow. Wait for the horse to exhale before taking your reading off the tape. The length is measured in inches from the point of the shoulder to the point of the buttock. You will need an extra pair of hands to help. One end of the tape is held on the point of shoulder and the tape in run along the horses side diagonally to the point of buttock.Take several measurements and average for best results. With the two measuaements you have taken, use the following formula to work out your horses' weight:

heart girth x heart girth x body length
            ______________________                       = body weight

                                   330

        70 x 70 x 66
         ------------------    = 980 lbs
                330

You can also use this handy calulator to approximate your horse's weight:

Heart Girth - in... Length - in... ... Weight - lbs...

When experimenting with these formulas, the following results have been observed:

It can be surprisingly accurate.
It can be totally wrong.

Since every breed of horse is built differently, and confirmation the results can vary greatly.

If you don't have a specially calibrated weight tape, you can measure your horse's heart girth with an ordinary measuring tape and use the following table to get an estimate of your horse's weight.
