WINNIPEG, CANADA -- The United States Equestrian Team (USET) begins its quest for Pan American Games medals Monday with the team Dressage competition. The U.S. team consists of riders with some, but limited amounts of, international competition. In 1998, Lynda Alicki of Monroe, GA helped the USET win the team Gold Medal in the Nations Cup at Hickstead, England, the only time the USET has ever won a Nations Cup in Dressage. She is competing on her Impressario. Debbie McDonald of Hailey, ID represented the U.S. in the 1998 World Cup Final in Gothenburg, Sweden and was also part of the USET’s Silver Medal team at the 1997 North American Dressage Championships. She is competing on Brentina, owned by Peggy Thomas. Donna Richardson of Escondido, CA and Betsy Rebar Sell of Akron, OH are both starting their first international event. Richardson is riding her Jazzman and Sell is on her Wonderful Walden. Pan American Games Dressage is competed at the Intermediaire I level (as opposed to the Grand Prix level competed in the Olympics) and the U.S. is a strong medal contender. The U.S. has won the team Silver Medal in the last three Pan American Games after winning Gold in 1983. The USET is a non-profit organization that officially represents the United States in international competition, and carries the responsibly for selecting, training, equipping and financing equestrian teams of the highest possible standard to compete for the U.S. in Pan American and Olympic Games, World Championships and other major international events.
