SAMSUNG NATIONS CUP SERIES
HICKSTEAD (GBR), 28 JULY
Ireland won the Samsung Nations Cup OF Hickstead, beating the British
Olympic hopeful team by one fault and France by two faults. They were in
the lead after the first round and this young team of riders kept there
cool to the overall victory.
This is Ireland´s six Samsung Nations Cup win this season, which
historically has never been achieved before. As a result Ireland has now
further widened the gap in the league table towards the Samsung Nations
Cup World Final in Rome in October.
Despite a double clear from France´s Michel Robert, France were unlucky
as Philippe Rozier´s horse Barbarian lost a shoe and had to withdraw
from the first round. France is still in second place behind Ireland in
the Samsung Nations Cup lead table. Great Britain were also unlucky in
the first round when the Olympic hopeful young rider Andrew Davies -who
jumped a double clear in Aachen with Captain Wellington - went before
the bell and was eliminated in the first round. The Saudi-Arabian team,
trained by Nelson Pessoa Brazil, were very impressive and both Ramzy Al
Duhami and Khaled Al Eid produced double clears.
GIJÓN (ESP), 29 JULY
The Belgian team won Samsung Nations Cup in Gijón (Asturias). The final
result of this class was: Belgium, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Great
Britain, USA, Netherlands and Portugal.
Belgium made good use of a great performance on the first round and
obtained the triumph. The rider Dirk Demeersman, riding First Samuel,
finished with a clear round in both rounds.
The French team got 11 points and finished second. Behind Germany,
placed third, Spain, host country, obtained the fourth position with an
excellent performance of Ricardo Jurado who, with Demeersman and the
American rider Schuyler Riley, was the only one who made the two rounds
without penalty.
The shakeup of the day was the falling down of the French rider Michel
Hécart, on his horse Kannan, in the last fence of a spectacular first
round. Rider and horse didn't suffer any damage.

PONY RIDERS COMMITTEE MEETING
The Pony Riders Committee met on 31 July 2000, after European Pony
Championships, which took place in Hagen in Germany. These championships
encountered a great success for the sport despite the adverse weather
conditions, and the Organising Committee should be congratulated with a
special mention to the Organiser, Mr Ullrich Kasselmann for the
incredible efforts made to run the competitions in exceptionally
difficult circumstances.
The Committee discussed many items however special focus was made the
following topics:
the re-measurement procedure of the Ponies, this item was thoroughly
discussed and a number of changes to the Rules are being recommended.
The Executive Board will review these at their next meeting and it is
intended that the new measurement rules be implemented 1st January 2001.
For the revision of the Rules for Pony Riders to be enforced in 2002,
the Committee have decided In regard to the Pony Dressage Championship
to reduce the number of participants from each NF to 4 instead of 5
riders.
A freestyle Dressage test for Ponies would be circulated to the NFs for
comments and eventual inclusion in Championship program in the future as
it was felt that as the level of Dressage had much increased, this would
bring much to the development of the sport.
Further to requests of the National Federations present in Hagen, it was
agreed that a request would be made to the Organisers of the 2001 the
European Pony Championships, Vejer de la Frontera (ESP) to change their
dates to the usual dates of these championships to the last week-end of
July 2001.
FEI MEET ILPH
A meeting took place between the FEI and the International League for
the Protection of Horses (ILPH) on July 24 in London (GBR). The ILPH, an
organisation historically involved in welfare issues for less privileged
equines, has participated in several FEI projects in recent years. The
ILPH has repeatedly supported the FEI, specifically with regard to
veterinary research pertaining to welfare issues (heat and humidity
research, long duration transport of horses, the Code of Conduct).
The meeting focused on issues for the future and the format the FEI-ILPH
collaboration would take, such as combined educational courses in
countries where the equestrian sport is developing, plans for research
in medication, attention to the fate of working horses and donkeys in
countries where FEI events are organised, etc. It was decided that a
Working Group, having representatives from both the FEI and the ILPH,
would further define the topics where both organisations could help each
other or benefit from each other's activities. The Working Group has
already planned its first meeting for August 2000.
