FEI DELEGATION VISIT ATHENS
An FEI delegation composed of the President, HRH The Infanta Doña Pilar de
Borbón , Mr Freddy Serpieri, 1st Vice President, Dr Bo Helander,
Secretary General, Dr Giuseppe Della Chiesa, member of the Eventing Committee and
consultant appointed by the FEI for the Eventing competitions of the 2004
Games, and Catrin Norinder, Manager Olympic Department, visited Athens on
7 and 8 November.
Several meetings were organised with representatives of the Organising
Committee of the 2004 Olympic Games (ATHOC) to review important aspects of
the organisation of the Games, such as:
· Sports organisation, including equestrian division (with Mr, Nikolas Karidis, Competition Manager)
· Venue location, test event
· Competition schedule
· Veterinary issues
· Training of the Greek national officials
· Accommodation
· Transport
· Security
· Technology plans, which received special attention
The FEI delegation also met with the ATHOC President, Mrs Gianna
Angelopoulos-Daskalaki and the Minister of Sports, Mr George Floridis.
The FEI will closely monitor the situation in regard to the start of the
construction of the equestrian venue. The meetings were held in a very
cooperative and fruitful atmosphere and the FEI delegation was favourably
impressed by the professional presentations that were given and by the
works in progress.
FEI BUREAU MEETING IN LAUSANNE
The FEI Bureau will meet on 13 and 14 November in Lausanne (SUI). Among
theimportant items of discussions are the following:
· Allocation of the 2003 European Championships in the three Olympic
disciplines of Jumping, Dressage and Eventing
· Implementation of the recommendations of the Eventing Safety Committee
· Rules of the new FEI discipline of Reining, which will be presented for
final approval at the 2001 General Assembly
· Reports on Sydney Olympic Games and preparation of the 2004 Games in
Athens.
The Eventing Committee will hold a meeting in the FEI Secretariat in
Lausanne on Saturday 11 November and will meet with the Strategic Planning
Committee on Sunday.
On 13 November, the Bureau is invited for lunch by Lausanne authorities.
Several personalities will attend the official dinner organised the same
evening jointly by the FEI and the Swiss Equestrian Federation, among whom
IOC President S. E. Antonio Samaranch, Me Denis Oswald, President of the
Association of Summer Olympic International Federations and some of the
best Swiss riders, Lesley McNaught and Willi Melliger, silver medallist in
Jumping in Sydney, Christine Stückelberger, several times Olympic
medallist will also pay a visit to the Olympic Museum on 14 November and meet with
Mrs. Françoise Zweifel, director.
ST. GALLEN (SUI) WITHDRAWS FROM THE ORGANISATION OF THE 2001 WORLD DRIVING
PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP
The Swiss Equestrian Federation has informed the FEI that St.Gallen had
decided to withdraw from the organization of the 2001 World Driving Pairs
Championship, due to take place from 7 to 10 June.
Several Federations have already indicated their interest in hosting this
championship. The Swiss Federation is also investigating a possible new
venue. The Executive Board will take a decision on the reallocation of the
championship during the first weeks of December.
MILLSTREET WORLD CUP VICTIM OF THE STORMS
The 3rd world Cup competition of the 2000-2001 season in the Western
European League in Millstreet (IRL) only saw the participation of riders
from Ireland and Great Britain (plus a French rider living in Ireland).
AS a result of the heavy storms that devastated the British Isles, the
ferries from Europe could not take any horses in time to bring them to
Ireland.
FORMER AHSA PRESIDENT HONOURED
The Marty Simensen Memorial Trophy has been awarded to Richard McDevitt,
President of the American Horse Show Association from 1975 to 1987. This
annual trophy was awarded for the first time in 1996 in memory of Marty
Simensen, the USET Veterinarian for 22 years.
IN MEMORIAM
Anders Gernardt, a former Olympic jumping rider for Sweden and for many
years a much admired equestrian commentator died on 2 November of a heart
failure. He was 80 years old.
During the recent Olympic Games in Sydney, Anders Gernardt had for 13 days
reported on the equestrian competitions for Swedish TV.
Former Cavalry officer, Anders Gernardt rode for Sweden in the 1956 and
1960
Olympic Games, as well as in several Nations Cups.
