First Le Trec British Championships

Bowhill, Selkirk, Borders 5-6 August 2000

A large and very competitive entry is expected for the first British Championships in the equestrian sport of le TREC, taking place on the beautiful Buccleuch Estate at Bowhill, near Selkirk, over the first weekend in August.

Le TREC is the newest competition on the equestrian scene and is a combined test of orienteering and horse riding skills that originated in France. Since its introduction into this country by the British Horse Society in 1998, le TREC has grown rapidly. This year there are over 2000 riders competing throughout the UK in over 60 competitions.

These Championships are being run at two different levels. One level involves over 40kms of orienteering and is aimed at those riders who are more experienced and may have their sights set on the September World Championships in Austria. The other level is run over approximately 20kms for the orienteering, and focuses on more basic route finding. Even though a Championships competition, at this level it is perfectly possible for someone to make this their first le TREC competition. Above all, le TREC is fun.

Teams representing England, Scotland and Wales will contest the BHS Nations Cup but teams representing Riding Clubs, Riding Centres, Horse Breeds, in fact any appropriate group can enter to contest the BHS Team Trophy, along with individuals at each level.

First prize for the overall individual winner is a splendid saddle made by the Master Saddler, Chris Hinton, and generously donated by the Worshipful Company of Saddlers. Other prizes include holidays in the Scottish Borders, horse rugs and saddlery vouchers.

The BHS are indebted to His Grace the Duke of Buccleuch and to the Forestry Commission for permission to ride over this beautiful part of the country.
