British riders produced a clean sweep at the top of the roll of honour at this year’s Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials, the first time since 1991.
Mary King (GBR) who last won Badminton in 1992 with King William, again lifted the magnificent silver trophy after a clear round show jumping gave her and David King’s and Hiscox Insurance’s Star Appeal (37.8), the world’s most famous three day event title. Leslie Law (GBR) with just one fence down in a careful show jumping round continued his seasonal form to claim second place with the Shearwater Insurance Company’s aptly named grey gelding, Shear H2O (46.8). Leslie and Shear H2O, trailblazers for this year’s event, put up an impressive performance over the cross country yesterday. Rodney Powell (GBR), a previous winner in 1991 with the Irishman II, today claimed third place with Marguerite Boucher’s 17.hh bay gelding Flintstone (50.4). The combination, who were 18th after dressage, moved up 15 places with the help of a clear round in yesterday’s cross country spot-on the optimum time. Andrew Nicholson (NZL) in second place after the speed and endurance phase had five show jumps down with New York to drop to eighth place. Australian rider Brook Staples riding in his first Badminton produced a valuable clear round over the show jumps to move up into fourth place and produce a memorable Badminton debut. © Badminton 2000 Horse Trials For further information please visit the Badminton 2000 Horse Trials Website Badminton 2000 or contact the Badminton 2000 Horse Trials Office,70 Foundry Road Malmesbury, Wiltshire SN16 0AW Tel: +44 Tel (0)1666 823335 Fax: +44 (0)1666 823335 or via email: info@badminton-horse.co.uk
