There's a new breed of guests that hotels have started catering to these days: horses. As interest in equine events increases, more hotels are catering to guests who own horses. More than 10% of U.S. households currently participate in riding, according to the Horse Industry Alliance, and hotels are finding that equestrian facilities are a major draw for vacationers who own horses. Liz King, director at the Equestrian Center at the Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress Resort in Orlando, Fla., says many riders in the Northeast travel to Florida for the winter horseshoe circuit. The center provides cookie treats and has veterinarians, chiropractors and even dentists on call, all for the horses. Room rates at the resort range from $205 to $530 a night, and keeping the horse there costs $40 a night. Grooming and other services are extra. Some hotels not only have stables, but also will furnish a horse if you can't bring your own. The Jadestone Inn in Middleburg, Va., with room rates of $180 to $250, provides horses for fox hunting and trail riding for $50 to $125 a day. If you bring your own horse, the extra charge is $25 to $35 a day. |
